Touch – and being touched – sends out a powerful message. And if it’s in the form of a hug, all those messages are good.

I’ve known this for a long time because decades ago I came across some experiments carried out on baby chimps. The babies were given two options: cuddle up to a woolly fake mother chimp or get an endless supply of food from another chimp just made of wire.

And guess what? They nearly all went without food because they would rather have a cuddle that made them feel as though they were being embraced.

A surge in the number of people getting fish pedicures on the high street has prompted a health warning.
Experts are worried that the latest beauty craze – offered in scores of salons – could spread infection and disease.

The Health Protection Agency says the practice is the subject of a major investigation.

BMA attacks health bill’s ‘power to GPs’ pledge

In a briefing paper, Health and social care bill: A genuine devolution of power, the union says that although it agrees in principle with health secretary Andrew Lansley’s plans for clinician led commissioning, the wording of the bill “does not match the rhetoric”.

The BMA says it has scrutinised the document and is very concerned that GPs will not get as much power as has been suggested by what ministers have said in public.

“As currently worded, the BMA believes the powers of the secretary of state and the commissioning board are overly restrictive and controlling and actually go against pledges to devolve power and put clinicians ‘in the driving seat.’ Ultimately they are likely to prevent doctors from delivering the improvements that clinician-led commissioning has the potential to produce,” says the paper, published on 28 February.

They say that it’s rude to ask a woman her age, but I’m very tempted to ask Lorraine Mackie how old she is. The owner of Anthyllis, an organic health and beauty centre on Edinburgh’s Haymarket Terrace, has beautifully glowing skin and could be anything between 35 and 55 years old, I really can’t tell.

Even better news is that she’s about to give me a facial. When your therapist looks this good she must know what she’s talking about, right?

Nurse suspended after claims he deliberately injured patient

A NURSE has been suspended over allegations that he deliberately injured a patient with severe learning difficulties.
Andy Truten, 50, who works at an NHS centre for adults with learning disabilities, has been accused of pressing a set of keys into the hand of the patient until he was injured.

Police are investigating the claims.

And Truten, of Kirkintilloch, near Glasgow, has been asked to stay away from the Overtoun Court, the NHS residential service in Rutherglen, Glasgow, where he’s based.
